It was simply impossible that she couldn’t sense his eyes on her, tracking her every movement as they meandered through the Druid camp. Eleanor could even feel them and they weren’t trained on her. In fact, it was likely he hadn’t noticed Wendolyn still had a companion with her at all.

“You do realise the Cirque Master’s gaze hasn’t strayed from you since the moment we walked out of his tent.” It was not a question. Questions left room for debate. And there was no denying his attention.

“Let him look.” Wendolyn shrugged one shoulder, her silvery hair shifting to fall like silk down her back. “Let him mourn his failures.”

“What happened between the two of you?”

Wendolyn gave her a sardonic stare cold enough to send ice skittering across molten lava. Eleanor frowned. If the ice witch didn’t want to give details, so be it. She would just have to dig them up herself. It would give her something to do while Wendolyn searched for the information they needed and left Eleanor to boredom.

Although, there was plenty to see to last a lifetime or two. A man with arms as thick as tree trunks and covered in designs of black ink nodded at her with a wink as they walked. A woman with one perfectly contoured body and two beautiful heads smiled kindly. They passed small fires with gnarled and ethereal alike tending cauldrons of food.

Wendolyn caught Eleanor staring open-mouthed at them all and she mumbled an apology. “It’s all right,” Wendolyn replied. “They’re used to it. They’re gawked at for a living.”

Eleanor glanced behind them to find the Cirque Master peeling off into a tent, his attention finally falling away from Wendolyn. Her shoulders relaxed and Eleanor’s curiosity about them inflamed again, distracting her from the wonders of the Druids.

They stopped abruptly in front of a tent thrice as large as the Cirque Master’s, and Wendolyn gestured toward it. “I’ll need to converse with some of the performers before they set up for the night. You will go in here.”

Eleanor blinked at her. “Go in there? You’re just going to drop me off at a random tent?”

“Are you an infant?”

According to her, yes. “What if you have the wrong tent and I walk in on someone while they’re indecent?”

Wendolyn looked vaguely amused. “What an interesting imagination you have.”

“I’m serious, Wendy.”

That shut her right up and her face fell. “Do not call me that.”

“I’m not going into an unknown tent.”

“It’s not unknown, I know exactly what’s in there.”

“Care to fill me in?”

“That would be rather dull.” Wendolyn turned and walked away, snow dusting the hem of her fur coat.

Eleanor muttered curses, turning to walk away, but a deep voice sounded just behind her, raking over her skin. “If Wendolyn Joubert told you to walk in that tent, I suggest you do so.”

She spun around to face the intruder, her attention snagging on his wolfish grin and mellow posture.

“I’ll take my chances with Her Highness, Queen of Ice and Misery.”

His eyes flashed with humour and Eleanor pushed down a tremor in her abdomen.
